There are two main types of veins in legs – deep veins and superficial veins. Deep veins are squeezed by muscles by walking and they carry most of the blood to your heart whereas superficial veins are just under the skin which is not highly important but can result in varicose veins.

Veins in our legs have one direction valves which make sure that blood flows upward to our heart. When these valves fail the blood flows back in our veins which results in high pressure in veins while standing. Increase in pressure results in broadening of the veins and they are not able to close correctly. The backward flow of blood into the legs along the veins causes the development of varicose veins. This causes discolouration in veins which appear like bruises.

Here are some of the main reasons for varicose veins:

  • If you are female – there are high chances of women getting affected with varicose veins compared to men. According to various researches, in females hormones inclined to lose the bars of the veins resulting in valves highly prone to fail in carrying blood upward. Hormones are chemical changes that occur in our body because of menopause, pregnancy and premenstrual syndrome.
  • Your age – with age veins in your body starts to begin to drop their flexibility which causes valves inside them to lose their ability.
  • Your weight – weight puts additional pressure on our veins in legs and they have to make more efforts to carry blood to the heart. More efforts can put further pressure on the valves making them exposed to failing. This cause of varicose veins is highly seen in women.
  • Genetics – There is a higher risk of you having varicose veins if a family member has the problem. So genetics can be partly responsible for developing varicose veins.
  • If you are Pregnancy – when you are pregnant, the quantity of blood increases to support the baby in growing which adds more pressure to your veins. And also hormonal changes during pregnancy cause muscular walls in the veins to lose resulting in the development of varicose veins.
  • Occupation – according to some research, occupation that require a person to stand for a long period of time increase the chances of development of varicose veins. The reason is that while standing for a long period your blood doesn’t flow effortlessly.
