Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT is a condition in which a blood clot forms inside the veins of the legs mostly. The sudden symptoms can be swelling in the foot, ankle or even leg.
The other problems can be cramping pain, warmer skin, reddish skin or bluish colour of the skin, in the leg.
There can be a pain in other parts of the body also such as shoulder pain, neck pain, swelling in arm or hands, along with the weakness. If the patient didn’t receive a proper treatment then it can turn into an untreatable disease “Post Thrombotic Syndrome”.
Dr Nikhil Bansal is having a good experience in treating Deep Vein Thrombosis by the advancement interventional radiology technique Thrombolysis. This treatment should be done only by an interventional radiology expert and is available at a very few places in India. This treatment is minimally invasive and the doctor removes the entire clot from the affected leg.

What is DVT?
DVT, as mentioned earlier, is a condition in which a blood clot gets formed deep inside a vein. It mostly occurs in a lower body part such as legs. A blood clot is a clump of blood.
The clots can be formed at any organ of the body but mostly occurs in the veins of the leg. Your doctor may call DVT by other names such as:
- Post-thrombotic Syndrome
- Postphlebitic Syndrome
- Skin discolouration
- Cramps in the legs
- Warmth in touch
- Redness of skin
- Swelling along with the pain
The causes or risk factors of the DVT are:
- Long hours sitting
- Heart attack or failure
- Pregnancy or recent childbirth
The doctor diagnoses the DVT by using these tests:
- Doppler Ultrasound
- CT Scan
- Impedance Plethysmography
There are several treatments available for the DVT including:
- Compression Stockings
- Minimally invasive Procedures
Among all these treatments, minimally invasive procedures are the most advanced treatments in which very less time is required for the recovery and the process doesn’t as such severe pain.
Thrombolysis is one of the most efficient minimally invasive procedure to treat the blood clots in the veins. In thrombolysis, the doctor inserts a long catheter into the blood vessel and the position it near the blood clot, so to deliver the medications directly to the clot. These medications then dissolve the clot to the maximum extent.
During the procedure, the doctor uses imaging to guide the catheter and to check whether the clot is dissolving or not. In short, the treatment is to dissolve the blood clot and minimize it as much as possible to restore the blood flow.
Dr Nikhil Bansal is having a vast experience in treating DVT using this procedure, and according to him, it is the most efficient procedure as it requires very less time. And also the patient doesn’t have to suffer from severe pain as it was in traditional surgery methods.
