In thrombolysis, the doctor inserts a long catheter into the blood vessel and the position it near the blood clot, so to deliver the medications directly to the clot. These medications then dissolve the clot to the maximum extent.

During the procedure, the doctor uses imaging to guide the catheter and to check whether the clot is dissolving or not. In short, the treatment is to dissolve the blood clot and minimize it as much as possible to restore the blood flow.
